Groups

Critical Therapy provides a safe and confidential space to explore problems in a group setting.  We offer both therapeutic and support groups. Our therapeutic groups, consists of a small number of participants, who meet regularly together under the guidance of a psychotherapist, to help themselves and one another. Our support groups are usually larger (10-15 people) and focus on supporting members through the healing process, with the help of a psychotherapist.

What is the difference between a therapeutic or a support group?

Therapeutic Groups focus on change and opportunities for growth. Group members embark together on the process of transformation. In an intimate and confidential setting, members focus on relationships dynamics and learn how to work together as a team. Together groups explore issues around mental health wellness, family dynamics, personal trauma, etc. Our short term therapeutic groups last for a few months, and our long term therapeutic groups last between 6 months to a year.

Support Groups are designed to focus on coping strategies. Members share a problem or situation (for example: domestic violence, alcoholism,). Members help each other by offering support and comfort. Our Support Groups focus on short term therapy and support and may last from 3 months to 6 months.

Does group work help?

Group therapy helps individuals learn that they are not alone and others can offer comfort.  Both therapeutic groups and support groups, are opportunities for participants to learn how to work together on common problems. Since a group is a microcosm of the macro world in which we live, they provide the perfect spaces for members to process, understand and critically analyze their environments and perceptions. In group, one can also expect to experience the confluence of race, class, and gender; the effects of the present as well as the past will be felt.

Can I join at any time?

All our groups are closed groups.  Once the admission process has closed, we do not allow others to join.

What does group therapy and support groups cost? Are they covered by insurance?

We accept out-of-network insurance and typically psychotherapeutic groups are covered.  Support groups are not covered by insurance and they are usually less expensive.  All group costs are set based on our sliding scale.
